40 years of HIV/AIDS: Anton 'Mental Health Matters! Especially for people who use drugs or living with HIV'
'Mental Health Matters! Especially for people who use drugs or living with HIV' Anton Basenko (Ukraine/Belgium) Programme Manager at EATG This World AIDS Day, EATG launches a campaign to raise awareness around persistent stigma and discrimination faced by people living with and communities affected by HIV/AIDS and the impact on their lives and mental health. Furthermore, we aim to foster different EU institutions’ interest to act on HIV, human rights and stigma-related issues. With this campaign, we present stories of people living with and communities affected by HIV coming from different realities across Europe and Central Asia. Their stories showcase how stigma and discrimination is still a barrier to an effective response. IAS 2023 satellite: Person-centred approaches to address the health needs of people living with HIV
Despite advances made by health systems to improve the care of people living with HIV, a higher burden of multimorbidity and poorer health-related quality of life are reported by many people living with HIV in comparison to people without HIV. Ensuring the best possible quality of life for those living with and affected by HIV by reducing HIV infections and related morbidity and mortality will only be possible through an integrated response to clients' health needs and preferences. Getting care right for people living with and affected by HIV requires a flexible healthcare system that allows people to decide on their degree of self-management. IAS – the International AIDS Society – organized a satellite session which was held on 24 July 2023 at IAS 2023, the 12th International HIV Science Conference. This satellite session highlighted the latest evidence, promising practices, and reflections on the operationalization of person-centred care principles for HIV. It featured selected publications from the Journal of the International AIDS Society supplement on this topic which was launched at IAS 2023. This session will be of interest to clients, programme planners and implementers, researchers, as well as policy makers. Link to access supplement: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/17582652/2023/26/S1 • Introduction and overview of the key themes of the Journal of the International AIDS Society special issue on person-centred care, Rena JANAMNUAYSOOK, Institute of HIV Research and Innovation, Thailand • A people-centred approach to enhance the long-term health and well-being of people living with HIV in Europe, Jeffrey V LAZARUS, Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), Spain • Person-centred dynamic choice prevention in rural Kenya and Uganda: SEARCH SAPPHIRE study, Jane KABAMI, Infectious Diseases Reseach collaboration, Uganda • Patterns of person-centred communications and provider perspectives to inform the design and implementation of a facility-based improvement intervention in HIV clinics in Zambia, Njekwa MUKAMBA, Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ), Zambia • Integrating an electronic client feedback tool into continuous quality improvement processes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Davina CANAGASABEY, PATH, United States • Improved clinical outcomes for clients on preferred differentiated ART in Uganda, Esther NKOLO, USAID Uganda, Uganda • Integrated models of HIV care, hypertension and diabetes treatment in eSwatini and South Africa, Maggie MUNSAMY, Department of Health, South Africa • Lessons learned from community engagement regarding phylodynamic research with molecular HIV surveillance data in the United States, Brian MINALGA, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, United States • Shifting the power dynamic in the delivery of adolescent and youth-friendly health services, Tung DOAN, Y+ Global, Vietnam This Journal of the International AIDS Society supplement was organized by IAS – the International AIDS Society. People Living with HIV and Substance Abuse Disorder: Addressing Barriers to Viral Suppression
The co-occurrence of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) for people living with HIV (PLWH) may impact HIV transmission, morbidity, and mortality but is not a contraindication for HIV treatments such as antiretroviral therapy (ART). Guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) direct clinicians to screen for potential mental health disorders and provide ART to PLWH and SUD, but education is required for clinicians to understand and meet the treatment challenges for these individuals and choose between the various ART treatment options to meet their unique needs. This CMEO BriefCase entitled, People Living with HIV (PLWH) and Substance Abuse Disorder (SUD): Addressing Barriers to Viral Suppression, will discuss a specific case of an individual who must simultaneously face the challenges of living with HIV as well as having a SUD. Expert faculty will address mental health screening and different ART treatment options for HIV given the difficulties and unique barriers faced by patients with a comorbid condition of SUD. CUGH Virtual Week: Prioritizing Mental Health & Behavioral Studies in HIV/AIDS Response in LGBTQ Pop
Prioritizing Mental Health and Behavioral Studies in HIV/AIDS Response among LGBTQ Populations Organizer: University of South Carolina Mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and post‐traumatic stress disorder) occur at a high rate among LGBTQ populations (at the risk of HIV infection and/or living with HIV). Despite the associations between mental health conditions and behavioral and clinical outcomes such as high risks for HIV infection, reduced medicine adherence, and increased disability and mortality in this population, mental health and behavioral studies are often neglected in clinical practice. This session provides a unique opportunity to share state-of-the art research and practice experiences from scholars and key stakeholders in the globe. The audience will be able to have deep conversations and discussions with presentations.
